The premise of cosmetic surgery is to enhance an aspect of your appearance towards an aesthetic ideal. In my mind, the most exciting of the available procedures are those that rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. But how do you know if you need eyelid surgery? Gaze into the mirror. What do you see? Captivating, laser sharp eyes? Or, do you see tired, droopy eyes that certainly look older than you feel? The sad thing is that these eyes also make the rest of you look disproportionately tired.

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) improves the appearance-and occasionally function-by removing excess fat and sagging skin from around the eyes. The procedure is usually performed with a combination of local and twilight anesthesia. The eyelid crease is lifted in the upper eyelid by removing an ellipse of skin and excess fat from above. The result removes the overhanging skin while restoring the graceful skin-fold above the lash line.

There are two approaches for treating the lower eyelid. The most commonly used technique for younger patients is to remove only the excess fat from behind the eyelid, leaving no visible scars. Men, in particular, appreciate this. An alternative approach is used when there is both excess skin and fat. In this procedure, the incision is placed just below the lower eyelashes and the excess skin is removed to tighten the lower eyelid.

The results are often dramatic. Tired eyes are transformed after surgery into brighter, wider and more refreshed looking eyes. These remarkable changes result from a shorter procedure under local anesthesia with a rapid recovery.
