A dental block is administered by injecting the facial sensory nerves (infraorbital and mental) with a 30-gauge needle and 2ccs of 1% Lidocane with Epinephrine buffered with Sodium Bicarbonate. A lip block is then performed directly to the substance of the lip with emphasis on the commissural region. Finally, the patient’s peri-oral region is prepped. The open approach has a 4-5mm external incision in each commissure. The incisions are closed with one stitch using absorbable suture to grab deep tissue.

Post operative you should expect to be swollen and slightly tender. Depending on the individual, there may be some bruising as well. The majority of bruising and swelling usually subsides after the first week. Most discomfort, if present, usually resolves after 24-48 hours, although you will be sensitive to light or medium pressure for about 2 weeks.
